FedCup Tennis Tournament

Wednesday, February 06, 2008

Chism Brothers Painting participated in helping to bring the 2008 FedCup Women's Tennis to San Diego. One of our clients, Bill Kellogg, President of the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, asked us to be one of the pledging companies. The event took place last Saturday in La Jolla. Congratulations to the Beach and Tennis Club for their hard work in being one of the key sponsors!

We encourage our clients to keep us informed of what they are doing in the community. We love hearing from you all about how we can get more involved in our great city of San Diego!

Paint Companies San Diego

Monday, January 28, 2008

If you are determined to use the lower or middle bid when receiving paint quotes, make sure you double check the type of paint the contractor will use. They may say they are using premium paint from the local paint store, but some contractors can say one thing and do another. We recently painted the complete exterior trim for a new client in La Jolla who had hired one of our main competitors in town just two years before. We had to completely repaint all the trim that was done by that contractor. Sometimes, trim will only last a few years, but on this home, the owner should have seen a good 5 years on most areas. We repainted it with a product from Sherwin Williams called "Duration" which boasts a lifetime warranty. Of course, we don't think it will last a life time, but it is a very premium paint that will last a lot longer than 2 years! I first thought that the previous painter just did not prep things right, which could be. However, I was talking to another well known painter, Peek Brothers Painting, who said he too repainted a home done by the same painter who used "cheap" paint. The job lasted 2 years, just like the one we repainted. Peek Brothers repainted the exterior with a premium paint, and the owner said it still looks good after five years!

All paint companies in San Diego have low grade, medium, and premium grade paints. A professional painting company like Peek Brothers and our company will give you an honest answer of the BEST products to use on your home. The second thing we will do is never skimp on the preparation, which is the main reason paint fails early! There are many more reasons a company can underbid a professional. You can rely on a true professional to always do the right thing.

Mission Hills 100 Year Anniversary

Tuesday, January 22, 2008

100 Year Old Community

Last Saturday, the community of Mission Hills, celebrated their 100 year anniversary! Over 50 residents from the community came to the afternoon event which featured a special guest speaker who spoke on the history of Bungelow & Craftsman-style homes.

Mission Hills is one of the oldest and unique communities in San Diego. It has done an excellent job to preserve and protect the historic homes as well as minimize the amount of commercial business. This has helped keep the town quiet and peaceful!

Chism Brothers Painting was honored to be the main sponsor of the anniversary. We were glad to help. We helped with the cake, water, and coffee. Mission Hills is where our painting first began many years ago, so we fully support everything Mission Hills Heritage is doing!

Restoration Specialist

If you are a resident in Mission Hills or own an older and/or historic home in San Diego, please consider calling to discuss your project with us. We are one of the only painting companies in San Diego that specializes in the restoration of old homes. We are particular when taking on a project too. For example, we will not repaint a historic home quickly and improperly. This has happened on a number of homes in the Mission Hills area, and the jobs just don't last. People hire Chism Brothers because we do the job right. This means that if wood needs complete stripping or replacing, we will get it done! So if you are one who wants to preserve your home and history, please let us help! Pricing an older home can be rather tricky too, but it might be more affordable than you think.

CPR Training For Employees

Monday, January 14, 2008
CPR Training For Employees image

Last Monday, Chism Brother's employees all gathered at our Kearny Mesa office to attend a half day CPR training meeting. All of our field employees received their certification for CPR as well. Our company is committed to doing the right thing on and off the job. We always make sure our employees are trained in the skills of painting but also receive the proper safety training so they can possibly avoid unnecessary injuries at work.

How does this benefit our clients? The more safety training Chism Brothers does, the lower our worker's compensation will be. This will then lower our overhead expenses and cause a smaller price tag to our high quality work! Most paint companies do not take safety as a concern. They can sell at lower prices but if anything happens on the job and they are uninsured or careless, you the homeowner will get blamed.

The bottom line is: make sure you research your contractors in California carefully, because there are many legal requirements that most contractors do not follow or implement in their business.

The Founding of Mission Hills

Wednesday, January 09, 2008

The Mission Hills Heritage will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of Mission Hills on January 19th at Francis Parker. Those of you who are interested in history or the preservation of an older community will not want to miss this event. Mission Hills is one of the oldest communities in San Diego and has a charm like no other place in town! This area of town is where the Chism brothers first began learning to paint from their father, Milton Chism. The Chism sons grew up and went to school in Mission Hills, so many wonderful memories are associated with this town.

Chism Brothers Painting will be sponsoring this event by donating the cake and providing the coffee for the event. For more information, please visit the Heritage Website

Monday, January 07, 2008

Chism Brothers is committed to being the best in customer service online, over the phone and in person. We recently installed a new function on our website that you can see at the top right section of your screen called, "Quick Request." How many times have you gone to a wesbite, filled out a request and waited for over 24 hours for a response? With this new feature, the request is sent directly to an estimator in the field on his cell phone. He can quickly respond to your request when he is at a good stopping point. A typical response time during normal business hours will be no more than 30 minutes. This service is for existing customers and those of you who wish to give us a try!

Secondly, we wanted to say Happy New Year! We are all back to work and ready for another wonderful year serving our new and past clients. We look forward to hearing from you soon!

Unique Metal Paint Finishes: Bronze

Monday, December 10, 2007
Unique Metal Paint Finishes: Bronze image

We recently worked up a sample for a client who desired to have a bronze look installed to their existing black metal railing system. The cost to remove, reinstall and apply a finish would have been extremely expensive. So instead, we gave them the option to properly prep and repaint the railings with a faux finish. One option was to do a faux called, "parchment" or using a rag effect. This option is less expensive and gives a good "curbside" appeal. The section option was using metallic paints to create a more realistic bronze look.

Here are a couple of close up samples of the bronze metallic effect: Sample One: & Sample Two  (Believe it or not, this process is NOT that expensive!)

Chism Brothers Painting has the right people working for them to help you get the look and feel you want for your home. If you want to completely restore your home, change the room colors or just try something unique, please allow us a chance to help!

Faux Finished Entertainment Cabinet

Wednesday, December 05, 2007
Faux Finished Entertainment Cabinet image

Many people may not realize that we at Chism Brothers do more than just painting. Several members of our team are skilled other areas related to painting such as: faux finishes, glazing, staining and restoration of old homes. Below is a quick story of a job we just finished with photos to share!

We recently were asked by a repeat client in Del Mar if we knew of a good finish carpenter. We referred Johnny Paauwe who can do just about anything with wood and all on site. This is what they needed. He began doing basic repairs around the home followed by more and more intricate and detailed finishing woodwork: built in closets, bookcases, etc. One of the final request was building a custom entertainment center on site. Chism Brothers had already finished several cabinets around the home for them and were able to photo shoot the final entertainment center: step by step.

If you have a home remodeling question, please contact us. We will do whatever we can to answer all your questions and make sure you have the right people doing your projects! View Photos Now

December Safety Talk

Monday, December 03, 2007

This morning our staff met for our monthly Character & Craftsmanship meeting. The staff was reminded about our motto to "do the right thing" at all times. We also had a brief safety meeting which is required by law. This month the discussion was on "Safety At Home." The ratio of deaths and injuries away from work is 3 to 1 these days. People tend to be more careless when they are doing home projects: i.e. standing on a box to change a light bulb instead of a ladder or using flip flops to cut the grass instead of proper shoes. So we reminded our people to take extra precautions when doing work at home.

Being safe on and off the job is a benefit for our clients too. Safety meetings are not necessarily fun and may seem elementary for some of our seasoned painters. However, it is sometimes those simple reminders and talking through the things that can happen that will make us all more alert and careful when we do things. Our clients benefit from safety meetings because they keep our operating costs down. Worker's compensation cost can be lowered simply by having a safety meeting!
