Out of Business Already!

You may have heard advertisements for a product called, "Liquid Stucco" on the radio recently. There was a similiar company in town called, "Red Diamond Coatings" selling a similiar ceramic coating. Unfortunately, Red Diamond did not last very long. They went out of business within the last several weeks.Closed.jpg Red Diamond Coatings came to San Diego around 3 years ago to sell the "state of the art" paint coating with a 50 Year Guarantee! It followed the popular Liquid Stucco and Siding that was being advertised in parts of the U.S. I was concerned and told the company that I did not think it was ethical to offer such warranties. I asked them what would happen if the paint failed in 10 years and they were not in business. My concern was validated when I heard the news that RDC had closed their doors for good. The product was originally developed by a company in Canada and is still sold by a different name at a local San Diego store called Colorama. These new ceramic coatings are excellent, but BEWARE of whom you hire to apply the material. A number of the companies around the United States will do a few things that are unprofessional. 1) They will hire subcontractors to apply the paint. 2) They will sell you on the product saying it will last 25 years, 50 years, or for life! 3) In order to sell the amazing warranties, "Never Paint Again," they charge a very high price, and it is NOT worth it. I have written several blogs on this issue, because I believe many San Diegans are being taken advantage of when hiring these high-pressured sales companies. Beware of dishonest companies selling good products with invalid guaranties.

I Live in Jamul and recently had two different paint contractors give me estimates on my house. When I asked them about “Liquid Stucco” they both told me it was overpriced and overhyped. They both offered similar products, with fairly different price ranges. One offered, “Envirocoating/ Red Diamond ceramic coating” for $14,875.00 and the other offered “Elastomeric” for $17,200.
What do you know about these products? The red diamond painter has been in business for 30 years, is well known in San Diego and has done excellent work for me in the past.
The other painter has excellent references, including the Hotel Del Coronado.

Elastomeric is not a product but a type of paint. For the painter who painted the Hotel Del, I would ask him what type of Elastomeric he will be using and how he will prepare for painting. Most painters do not apply elastomeric properly. The key is getting enough of the product onto to your home. The homes I have seen look like they were painted with regular paint. It should look real thick with no pin holes or major cracks showing. The EnviroCoat product takes over a month to cure. It will be slightly hard at first but will actually harden more in 2-3 months.

If your home is over 3,000 sq. ft (2 stories) the pricing doesn’t sound outrageous. If it is under that and there is not a lot of trim to paint, the prices sound high.
