5 Signs That Your San Diego Home Needs A Fresh Coat of Paint

When you get in your car and something is wrong, you’ll know thanks to flashing lights or alerts. Unlike your car, your home isn’t equipped to notify you when it is in need of repairs. Unfortunately, your home will never tell you when it’s ready for a fresh coat of paint.

However, there are several signs that will show you that it’s time to call your local house painter. As professional painters, we have seen so many cases where the home’s surface was ignored for too long. When we were called in to help, the repairs and painting were both more extensive and costly.

Here at Chism Brothers Painting, we always recommend proactive exterior maintenance and painting. Just like changing your car’s oil will keep you from rebuilding your engine every year, regular exterior maintenance will protect your home against a complete overhaul.

Is Your Home Ready To Be Repainted?

These are some of the signs that you should look for to determine if your home is ready to be repainted:

  • Fading - Chism Brothers Painting always chooses to use top quality paint. One of the reasons is that high-quality satin sheen paint will hold its color integrity for much longer than cheap flat sheen paints. Unfortunately, even the highest quality paint will eventually fade. You may notice this fading is most drastic on the sides of your home that are exposed to direct sunlight and weather. Usually this fading first begins on the west and south facing sides of houses.
  • Split Caulking - How does this relate to painting? Inspecting and replacing damaged, brittle caulk is part of our painting process! Calking protects your home against water damage, waterproofs windows/doors, posts and where the siding meets the corner boards. If you see splitting caulk, it’s time to give us a call.
  • Peeling and Chipping Paint - This is an obvious sign of decay. Paint that has failed needs to be fixed immediately. Not only is it an eyesore, but it also allows moisture, decay, pests and UV damage to begin eating away at your home.
  • Spider Cracks - Before the paint begins to peel and chip, it will most likely show warning signs. Spider cracks often form first. If you see spider cracks begin, give us a call before you are dealing with full-on paint failure. This will save you money in the long run.
  • Wood Rot - Paint helps to seal your wood against moisture. If your paint has broken down, forming spider cracks or even beginning to peel, your wood will be exposed to moisture. It’s only a matter of time until the wood rot begins. If you notice wood rot, it’s definitely time to call in the professional painter. After the damage has been replaced, your home can be repainted. Pay special attention to your sills and ledges when looking for wood rot.
