5 Tips To Protect Your Deck

Decks are usually a favorite feature in many homes. When the weather is nice, there’s no better way to enjoy the beauty of your backyard than sitting out on your deck!

As you well know, the ever changing weather can wreak havoc on your beautiful natural wood deck. In order to keep it looking its best, there are a few strategies that we recommend. This regular TLC will keep your deck in good repair, and combat the need for large-scale repairs.

#1: Schedule an Annual Cleaning

Decks grow mold and mildew. This breaks down your natural wood and causes deterioration. We recommend scrubbing your deck with a deck cleaner to remove mold, mildew, and dirt. A good cleaning can restore the shine!

An extremely effective method for deck cleaning is to use a power washer. Keep in mind, while power washing may seem like a tempting option, it may be best to leave this to the pros!

Power washing easily removes dirt, grime, mildew etc. The caution is that it can just as easily remove old flaking finishes and result in irregularities in your surface. Our painters are trained to power wash so you can rest assured that we will do the job correctly.  It may be necessary to replace some or all of the finish on the deck.

#2: Keep The Space Clear

Debris, particularly leaves, collect in the corners of decks. This is a perfect place for moisture to seep into your deck and seriously damage the natural wood. Wood rot is a real concern when dealing with debris sitting on your deck.

Your deck has been designed to drain in order to keep moisture at a minimum and wood rot at bay. Help this process along by keeping your deck clear.

#3: Routine Staining & Sealing

Nothing looks better than a freshly stained and sealed deck. The gloss and rich colors create a beautiful focal point in your yard. Beyond beauty, this also provides essential protection against wood rot, insects, UV damage, moisture intrusion and more.

Although you can stain and seal a deck after the wood or finish is in bad repair, It is best to keep up with routine cleaning, staining and sealing as you are investing in the future of your deck, and therefore, your home.

#4: What’s Under Your Furniture?

Many decks have beautiful outdoor rugs. These outdoor rugs add an element of style and protect the deck from the wear and tear of the deck furniture.

However, you need to be cognizant of the material that the rug is made from. You don’t want moisture to collect under your rug and rot your deck! Recycled plastic rugs are not only great for the environment, but they’re also a great choice since they don’t absorb moisture!
