We recently met a homeowner who needed some fairly extensive wood refinishing done. Troy, one of our foreman, headed up this Del Mar project and completed most of the work himself, with the help of one of our other painters.
The interior work consisted of refinishing windows and french doors. We began by sanding the wood and using a steel toothbrush to wire off the mildewed and delaminated areas. Next, we finished the wood with two coats of Zinnser Quick-15™ Varnish, and sanded between coats with a coarse 3M Scotch-Brite Pad.
For the exterior, we worked on the front door assembly which had deep dog-claw scratches and also was badly delaminated, mildewed and weathered. We began by using Jomax® (bleach) to get rid of the mildew, and then thoroughly scraped away all the damaged areas with a rounded carbide scraper. Next, we used a wood stripper, and a steel wire-brush to prepare the area for Z90 Wood Magic restorer. To finish the wood, we used one coat Cetol® 1 in the Teak color, and finished it with two additional coats of Cetol® 23 in the lighter Natural shade.
Some of the exterior windows and doors, painted in green, were cracked and peeling, so we prepped and sanded the wood and then liquid masked the trim. We used two coats Sherwin Williams Solo™ Satin custom matched to the pre-existing Cypress hue.
