My son who is now a marketing guru thinks I should get with the new millennium and start blogging. He just sent me a brief article about what a lame excuse it is to use the tired old phrase “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks”. Now being properly chastised I thought, hey there is no time like the present to get started.
I am not a blogger by trade just a painter. Everyone seems to be getting on the band wagon now a days and I never liked doing just what everyone else is doing so instead of blogging I think I would rather do some PLOGING. You know, combine the two words painter and blogging and voila: PLOGGING. I though it was good Sort of sounds like plodding and I have always been more or less a plodder in life and it has gotten me this far. Not real exciting or even romantic so maybe PLOGGING will have to do for now. So I have now created my own word. It might in Webster’s (or Wikipedia) in a couple of years and I’ll be rich and famous, well maybe famous, well maybe just…happy that I can still have enough brain cells functioning to arrange letters together in somewhat of a coherent manner.
Which reminds me that it was not too long ago that blogging didn’t even exist. I think it came from another word that didn’t exist very long ago: Web and Log. And that was back when most people thought Webs were related to spiders. Well, anyway people combined the two words into weblog but it always seemed to come out as BLOG. Hence was born the art of BLOGGING.
Getting back to coining words, I actually coined a phrase a number of years ago. I started offering customers a service for small jobs and I simplistically named it “Painter for a Day”. Well people liked the service so we started putting in our marketing stuff. We were also involved in a painting contractors networking group where I shared the idea. I put a Trade Mark on the slogan, but figured guys were free to try the concept out. Before too long though not only the concept was being applied but also my Painter for a Day slogan. Well now guys all over the country I hear are using it. I did some research on Trade Marks and found out much to my chagrin that the slogan really was not Trade Markable (is that a new coined word???). It is too generic they told me. So from humble beginnings my little Painter for a Day is now all over the place. I am even told that the big box stores are even offering the service and the name! (So sue me…or Go ahead, make my day!). Maybe one day it will go viral and I will be famous if not rich. (And you thought viral meant getting the flu…avian or…make mine swine)
Happy Plogging.
