One of our foreman, Troy, entered his son, Matt, into a contest advertised on KFMB 760, "Give A Soldier A Smile" by Dr. Peter Hellwig M.A.G.D, D.D.S and his wife Kathy of El Cajon. There was to be one grand prize winner of the contest who would receive a full boat freebie on cosmetic dental reconstruction appraised at 25-30k. Matt was the winner of 6 finalists!
Troy entered an essay Matt wrote in the 2nd grade about 9/11, a picture of him at age 13 and a current picture of him in his cammies. After Matt was chosen as a finalist, Troy answered a few more questions in a Q & A as to why his son should be chosen:
Q: Dental work history?
A. Just cleanings and fillings that I'm aware of, and a root canal.
Q: What is your current dental need or desire?:
A: His teeth were straight and nice growing up until about age 13 and then oddly (to me) an extra set of canines came in, or maybe just came in late? But they came in over the top of his other teeth and made his teeth crooked. Need/desire would be any chunk of work you'd be willing to do to fix it or give us a start in that direction.
Q: Why should Dr. Hellwig select your son?
A: I will forward this email to Matt so he can answer this and the other questions his way. As for me, I really don't know how to answer that. There are 6 different soldiers with a shot at something that could be miraculous for them. I love them all without even knowing 5 of them and judging by what i'm hearing and seeing in Dr. Hellwig, yourself and your office with the ceremony you mentioned and this opportunity, you all appear to love them as much as i and i suspect you'll probably choose the one in greatest need. Chosen or not, thats awesome. These are people that have serving others in their blood and i think each one not chosen as the grand prize winner will be happy to see one of their brothers lives improved. For me, my son being chosen as the winner in a longshot contest that he was unaware i even entered him in, would mean redemption and hopefully forgiveness. He's never said anything but a father needs to make sure his child's well being is handled and I failed him. It's the thing i'm most ashamed of. The work he needs is considered cosmetic and the subpar insurance I had wouldn't cover it. I failed to come up with the money needed for it in his teens. When he joined the Marines I thought, well maybe his benefits while there will cover it, nope. This is something I owe him so even if he doesn't win, someday soon I'll make it right. When I told him today that I had entered him and he was chosen as a finalist he gave me a look that almost seemed upset, I thought “uh oh I've broached something he's uncomfortable with or something.” But then he gave me a big hug and said, “wow dad thank you.”
Q: How would this dental work improve his life?
A: Look at his facebook, 80% of his pictures he either has his mouth closed or smiling in a way thats not revealing of his teeth. I can't say I think he has low self esteem because this kid has charisma. He's outgoing. He's incredibly handsome and incredibly humble. As someone who had perfect teeth into their 30's then after a fall is a snaggletooth, I know the drastic differences in ones self conscious feeling about their smile. I pray for the opposite for him, self conscious in his youth and a nice confident smile in his adulthood full of big cheesy grins in pictures.
