Kitchen Cabinet Painting: What Questions Should You Be Asking?

Kitchen with dark cabinets, stainless steel appliances, and a wooden dining table.

You know that it’s time to refinish your kitchen cabinets. You’ve done your research, determined that refinishing is the best choice for your cabinets, and now it’s time to wade through the contractors to find the right team for the job.

Of course, there are countless contractors who would be happy to sign you up for their services. How do you know which pro to hire? We have compiled a list of questions you should ask each potential contractor.

Do you specialize in cabinets?

This may seem like an odd question, but painting cabinets can be tricky! Just because someone is a professional painter, does not mean that they have the niche skills to paint cabinets.

Cabinet painting can be done through several different processes. If the painter is not familiar with the steps to paint cabinets properly, the results may be seriously lacking! Save yourself the headache and hire someone who works with cabinet refinishing on a regular basis.

What is your process?

Another way to figure out if you have found the right professional is to ask about their process. This will show you whether or not they really understand how to paint cabinets.

A properly prepped surface will have been cleaned, sanded AND primed. Without primer, the final coats will not adhere right, and the surface will not be durable. Plus, primer keeps the grain from showing through the final layers.

Asking the right questions will help you avoid issues and hire someone who will help you transform your kitchen into something that eye-catching, functional and long-lasting.

Do you have samples and pictures?

Sample boards will show you the skill level of the professional. You can compare different samples from different potential painters and figure out whose work you appreciate the most. This will also help you determine whether or not they know how to paint a cabinet well!

Photos are another great way to both gather inspiration, and see some of their previous work. Often, professional cabinet painters will be posting their work on social media. Chism Brothers Painting’s Facebook page is regularly updated with current projects!

Do you roll, brush or spray cabinets?

Did you know that there are different ways to repaint cabinets? Brushed and rolled painting is the most affordable way to have your cabinets repainted, but it can be tricky and not all homeowners are happy with the results.

The best way to have your cabinets refinished is to spray all of the cabinetry. Doors, drawers, boxes and frames will all be taken to the spray shop to be sprayed. During this process, the hardware might also be replaced. Most of our customers opp for this option and everyone is happy with the high quality results!

Are you licensed and insured?

This may seem like a strange question, but it is incredibly important to ask! Not all contractors are licensed and insured. This is a liability to yourself and your project. Unfortunately, there are too many stories of contractors who take the deposit and disappear.

By verifying that your professional painter is licensed and insured, you are protecting yourself and your investment.
