Decks are considered an extension of the home, like a second living room, for many homeowners. This is especially the case here in the San Diego area where we are blessed with so much sun and cooperative weather.

Unfortunately, time and consistent exposure to sun, wind, and rain (not to mention frequent use!) begin to take their toll on these awesome outdoor spaces. If issues aren’t addressed right away, they only snowball into larger and larger problems (for a few maintenance tips, click over to this article from House Logic).

In this particular case, we were wisely contacted before those large problems had a chance to take root. A transformation was definitely needed, though, and we were happy to roll up our sleeves and get to work.

Exterior Painting - Restoring an Attractive, Protected Surface to This La Jolla Deck

So, what exactly did this exterior painting process look like? Here’s a quick look.

Step #1: Protect the Surrounding Surfaces

As you can see, we carefully covered the deck’s floor, furniture, and glass to protect against any overspray.

Step # 2: Power Washed the Wooden Handrails and Connecting Stairs

Power washing not only removes bits of paint that are losing their grip, but it also washes away dirt, mildew, and any other contaminants that will keep the new paint from bonding properly. This is an essential step that contributes to a much longer-lasting, prettier finished product.

Step #3: Prep and Paint!

After careful prep (find out why this is so important here!), we painted the railing and stairs. Our client wanted a match to the existing color, but we did switch to a different brand that we thought would be a good fit for this application. In case you’re curious, we ended up using Behr Ultra exterior paint with a satin sheen.

Step #4: Go the Extra Mile!

This extra mile involved cleaning the glass surrounding the deck. Our awesome craftsman, Veirnon, took it upon himself to make sure it looked just as clean and attractive as the paint finish itself. Way to go!
