Retaining Wall Patching & Painting in La Jolla, September 2012

Certain homes require more ongoing maintenance, especially if those homes are near the ocean. Stucco retaining walls tend to require even more maintenance. This is because constant moisture lingers on behind the walls

and wants to penetrate the stucco. Even if the stucco is "waterproof" it will still be prone to crack over time. Our customer, on Neptune Place in La Jolla wanted all of his retaining walls painted to match his 3-story stucco home back in mid 1990s. Every two+ years, Chism Brothers will come out to do routine maintenance on the home, with most of that time focusing on the retaining walls. Painted retaining walls look great but do require patching and painting more often. So as the summer of 2012 came to a close, we sent Troy out to this home to patch and repaint the several hundred feet of stucco walls again.

Project Highlights

• The job only takes one of our painters two full days to complete and has to be done every couple of years.
• We ripped out all the loose, chipped and cracked stucco. Troy then took a wired brush to scrub down the areas just to make sure he got all the loose stucco completely removed
• Before we applied any new stucco, Troy applied a mildew sealer primer to help with bonding of the new patch and to help resist mildew and mold growth.
• The stucco was patched with thoro-seal and acryl 60 (helps waterproof and seal)
• Another clear mildew sealer primer followed by two coats of Dunn-Edward's Evershield to complete the job. (Note, DE Evershield does not have a real shiny finish, which is one of thereason's this product was used. It is a quality acrylic, exterior product. Also, we don't want to use the most expensive exterior paint on the market, because no type of paint will last more than a couple of years this close to the ocean. So we used the most cost-effective, yet effective approach for this surface.
