4 Tips That Will Make a Big Difference for Your San Diego Home Painting Project
Wouldn’t it be nice if you could get an automatic warning every time you were about to make a mistake of some kind? Whether it’s the wrong time to approach your boss, the wrong ingredient for your recipe, that pothole you never saw, or a wasted trip to the hardware store during a home improvement project, a little red flag would be nice now and then.
Well, we can’t help with your boss or that recipe you can’t quite get right, but we can kick some rocks out of your path when it comes to home painting. We always recommend hiring a professional, but if you do decide to tackle a DIY painting project, here are a few “red flags” to keep in mind.
We like saving people from a headache whenever we can.
Whatever You Do, Be Sure Your Painting Project Doesn’t Include…
#1. Cheap Paint
Believe it or not, cheaper is most definitely not better when it comes to your interior or exterior paint. Lower sticker prices may be attractive initially, but you often are buying a shorter lifespan, poor color retention, and adhesion issues that can lead to the need for more and more paint.
#2. Skipping, Or Minimizing, Surface Preparation
Whether it’s taking the time to repair wood rot on your home, patching cracked stucco, or properly cleaning and patching an interior wall, surface preparation is one of your very best friends. Sure, it takes extra time, but it will lead to a more beautiful, longer-lasting finish.
#3. Skimping On Brushes and Rollers
Just like paint, quality matters when it comes to your tools as well. In fact, picking the right brush for your specific painting project will have an unbelievable impact on how easily your work progresses.
#4. Ignoring Weather Conditions
You obviously (well, we hope at least) wouldn’t paint in the rain, but it’s also important to ensure that you’re allowing enough time for your surface to thoroughly dry before you tackle your project. Beside the obvious issue of moisture though, excessively hot and dry days can be problematic too. Following the sun on a bright day (like we often have here in San Diego) can be a helpful tactic, painting the sides in the shade first whenever possible. Your skin will thank you too.
