Michael & Terry Chism

Michael & Terry Chism

A gentleman in every respect, Michael is faithful, generous and thoughtful to his customers, his employees, and his family. He pauses before he reacts, trying to see all angles of a situation and all possible solutions. Driven by his love for God and his faith in His Word, Michael has a delightful commitment to his family and a very apparent and deep love for his wife. Outside of painting, he enjoys working out, biking, hiking, and all kinds of games, physical and mental. “We hire people based on their good character, and then we train them to be good craftsman.”

Terry Chism has been a vital part of the business “from the start, when we did all the paperwork without computers and answered the phones at home!” Cheerful and friendly, with a long-term, stable perspective on the company, she is thankful for our wonderful customers and wants to provide them the best experience possible. She is grateful to God for his grace towards Chism Brothers, but she is even more grateful for her husband, three children, and seven grandchildren. She loves swimming at the Y, bike-riding in Coronado, gardening, scrapbooking, and Bible-Study Fellowship. “I like being a part of Mike’s work, even if it’s a small time spent at the office. It gives me a better understanding of his day, his joys, and his challenges."

I have some family friends that own a painting company here in San Diego. They heard Chism Brothers needed an office manager so they recommended me for the position.  (Is this where I tell the part about how both Michael and Terry called on speakerphone to schedule the interview and how I thought it was my daughter and answered with a bright and cheery “Hello Beautiful!!!!”?  What an intro to my personality!) At the time, I had been praying for a position that had some “Meat” to it. I needed it to challenge me intellectually and satisfy my need to be social. I most certainly got that and so much more!

I love the diversity each day brings.  The true pleasure I have when I get to speak with customers that we have worked with before, the opportunity of getting to know our new clients and working with the schedule so that it fits into everyone’s timing.  And than there are all the office duties that it takes to make sure the office runs smoothly, especially making our daily lattes!

My time off is very quiet. I love to spend time with my 2 children and close friends, reading a good book, watch movies and long walks on the beach with my dog.

I started painting with my step-father when I was about 18 years old.  We worked together as a team for over 7 years.  I worked for several other companies over the years until I finally found Chism Brothers in 1993.

I have enjoyed meeting and working with the many clients over the years.  While I find great satisfaction adding color to people’s lives, I have also noticed how a choice in color says a lot about changes a client may be going through.  That is one of blessings about working at Chism Brothers, they teach us to look beyond the paint on the walls.

I am married with 3 lovely daughters.  I enjoy biking, swimming, listening to classical music, and listening to my favorite christian radio programs.

The first time I painted (and was paid for it) was in 1978.  My best friend took me up to Rancho Penasquitos where I worked as an apprentice doing production painting.

My favorite thing about painting is the satisfaction it brings by helping people improve the look of their home.

During my spare time I love to ride up the coastline in San Diego County on my motorcycle with my wife Christine.

I started painting ten years ago.  I sort of stumbled into the road that lead me to my career at Chism Brothers.  A friend of mine who was friends with Pat Chism told me of an opening they had at Chism Brothers for a painter.  I did not know anything about painting at the time, but I really needed the job, so I took a step of faith.  It is ten years later and not only have I learned the skills required to be a good painter, but I have also found a job I love.

One of the things I like about painting is it gives me an opportunity to bring life back into things that have faded over the years.  A splash of color can go a long way into adding character to home or business and I love seeing a clients eyes when they see the completed work.  I have to say my job has brought me quite a bit of satisfaction over the years.

During me free time I really enjoy taking my kids to the park.  We love spending the afternoons playing baseball or soccer.  Sometimes we go as a family and ride our bicycles on the numerous trails.   Occasionally you may catch us at the zoo or Legoland.  We also like to go as a family to Mexico for mission trips.

I started painting at the age of 18 in the summer of 1989.  A friend of mine invited me to join him helping a small painting contractor in East County during the summer.  When I first started I really did not enjoy painting very much, but as I acquired the skills and the experience I soon began to love my job.  24 years later I am still painting and for the last 8 years have been working for the premier painting company in San Diego county...Chism Brothers.

My favorite thing about painting is approaching a challenging project knowing our crew at Chism Brothers is going to turn it into something beautiful.  I also enjoy working directly with the customers to provide them with the best customer service possible.  At times clients have had bad experiences with previous contractors, are over-whelmed by the scope of the project, or unsure about the value of the investment they are about to make by painting their home or business and are nervous about moving forward with a project.  Hard work, attention to details, and listening to the customer’s requests will almost always put them at ease and brings me the reward of seeing satisfied customers in the end.

My favorite things in life are being with my wife and 4 children and sharing memorable times with them.  I also enjoy assisting the elderly and handicapped veterans by helping them with painting and other projects around their homes.  In recent years I have become an avid gym/fitness enthusiast.  I like watching MMA fights with friends and I am a rabid Pittsburg Steeler fan.  The greatest love of my life is my Lord and Savior...Jesus Christ.

While working at a oil and lube service center, I decided it was time for me to change more than oil.  I needed a better way to provide for my future family.  I noticed Chism Brothers was hiring, so I thought I would try my hand at painting.

I have found I really enjoy painting, especially the challenge of looking at a job in the beginning and figuring out the best approach that will give the customer a quality finish.

When I am not working my favorite thing to do is spend time with my wife and two daughters.  I also enjoy a nice relaxing day of fishing.

Painter

After serving in the Marine Corps for five years, I started painting off a whim.  I had never painted professionally before, but found I had a knack for it.  Maybe it was the attention to detail they taught us in the Marine Corps or the skills the foremen at Chism Brothers helped me develop, but I learned my new trade really quick.

Painting is very rewarding.  I enjoy watching a home or business at it is transformed by the hands of us at Chism Brothers.  It also brings me joy when I hear how happy the customer is when we are finished.

During my free time I enjoy watching sports, especially football.  I also enjoy spending time with my fiancé and my two dogs.

My career as a painter started in Phoenix, Arizona after the cabinet shop where I worked went out of business.  Eventually moving to San Diego with my wife and two small children, I decided to continue painting and turned to the local phone book to look for opportunities.  I called several painting contractors to see if any may be hiring.  Mike Chism returned by call and offered be a job starting the next day.  That was in 1986 and it has been a wonderful working relationship ever since.

A few things I enjoy about painting are meeting new clients, overcoming challenging set-ups, and hearing the words “our home looks wonderful”.

While I rarely have enough free time, what little I do have I spend with my family.  I treasure spending time with my wife of 34 years, spending time with my grown children, and spoiling my grandchildren.  These are my joys beyond measure.  I also love to read, to study, and to teach the Word of God.

Bernie Montijo

After graduating from high school I started an apprentice program with Chism Brothers and discovered on the first day that I enjoyed painting.

Ever since I was young, painting and drawing have been two of my favorite hobbies.  Chism Brothers have allowed me to turn my hobby into my life’s work.  I can honestly say, “I love going to work everyday”.

In my spare time I refinish furniture.  I like to practice with the different painting and glazing techniques.  I also enjoy the extra money I make when I sell the finished pieces.

James Becker

My grandfather is the one who introduced me to painting.  He had a small seasonal painting business in Los Angeles’ Hancock Park.  I made some wonderful memories while working with him during the summer months.

My favorite thing about painting is the joy of working with my hands.  I like details and the way they can make a finished job look great.

In my spare time you can find me playing tennis, spending time with my family or doing anything analog.
