Can Peel-Off Products Damage My Walls?

Painting, decorating and remodeling require much time, energy and money. Choosing paint colors can be stressful and if the combinations disappoint, then a second painting may be needed. Another option is applying wallpaper, and while many wallpapers have lost popularity over the years, a new trend is the peel-on, peel-off wallpaper borders and papers.

Several paint and home improvement companies carry the peel-off products, but a
common question seems to arise when considering these products. Will these products
ultimately damage the walls? Experts generally believe that the peel-off wallpapers are
safe for walls, but homeowners must consider the surface to which they apply these
products. Older walls with damaged dry wall and plaster walls could be damaged when
removing the peel-off wallpaper. In addition, walls that are not smooth would not be
ideal for wallpapers, as the paper may appear “lumpy.”

When applying these products, remember these important tips. First, lightly sand
the wall surface and clean with warm water. Allow the wall to dry. Be careful to measure
and mark (with a pencil) exactly where the wallpaper should be placed. Do not trust
your “eye” to level the paper. If the paper does need to be peeled off and re-positioned on
the wall, carefully remove the paper from each corner and work slowly to the center.
After each piece is applied, carefully smooth the paper just as regular wallpaper would be
smoothed.

When it is time to remove the paper, follow the tips listed above. If the paper
wants to adhere to the wall, be patient and remove the paper with a scraper and in small
portions. If properly removed, the paper can be placed elsewhere.

These products are eco-friendly and made of non-vinyl materials. There are no
messy pastes and chemicals and are available in many colors and designs. If you have
