Handrails get permanently dirty and smudged, and balusters start to get drab and dark.
The steps themselves? They take a beating, plus in older homes you might be covering all the potential of those wood risers and treads with threadbare carpet. Never a good thing.
All that to say, fresh paint and stain can make a tremendous difference for these workhorse surfaces, offering a stylistic update at the same time.

How about a real-life example?
In this case the stair treads and risers already looked great, and the balusters are stylish. No need to paint or stain. The rest of the trim, railings, and newel posts were in good condition, but the monochromatic stain washed out all the colors. Did it match? Sure. But did it have definition and character? Not really.
We carefully masked the surfaces, then sanded, prepped, primed, and painted.
The result is really stunning, with the crisp white drawing more attention to the surrounding natural finishes, and letting the iron balusters stand out as a focal point.
Just another example of how the right paint job can make all the difference, and it doesn’t always require an overhaul of what you already have.
