Our crew has been busy refinishing doors, decks and exterior trim in San Diego lately. Check out the before and after on some of our favorites jobs! Our clients know that in order to maintain the beautiful look of natural wood, appropriate care is a necessity.

Proper maintenance of your natural wood is imperative. Without careful staining and finishing, your exterior wood trim, doors and decks will quickly deteriorate.

When is it time to refinish?

How do you know when it’s time to refinish your exterior wood doors or deck? Sunlight will slowly break down the surface of natural wood, causing it to crack and turn grey. At this vulnerable point, it is even more susceptible to water damage.

One of the biggest signs that your surface is no longer protected from the weather is when it stops repelling water.

If your wood is older, starting to dry or splinter, staining and refinishing might help it last a few more years. This process will fill the cracks and hold the splinters in place.

Why stain?

Stain is resistant to peeling and brings out the natural grain in wood surfaces. A good staining job can last up to 7 years, protecting your natural wood from the weather. Although stains come in a bewildering array of options, hiring the right pro will help you choose the stain that is best suited for your home.

Stains come in a variety of tints, and we can help you choose the right shade to accent your home. This article from This Old House shows some of the more obscure stain colors, such as green and red.

Pay special attention to your deck

In San Diego, we have warm weather all year round. This means that your deck is going to be more susceptible to sun damage. Because your deck is the hub of your yard, we recommend getting on a maintenance schedule to keep your deck in tip top shape.

One of the easiest ways to take care of your deck is to clean it properly! However, even with the most thorough cleaning, it will need to be refinished at some point.
