Lacquer Fumes Can Cause an Explosion

Last Updated: January 23, 2007

If your painting project requires the spraying of cabinets, woodwork or furniture with lacquer, please take extra precautions. Spraying of lacquer and even certain oil base paints can be not only hazardous to one’s health but can cause an explosion in some cases. If a homeowner or contractor does not know the safety facts about certain paint products, it could be a fatal or life threating mistake. We strongly suggest hiring a painting contractor who specializes in finishing of woodwork. Ask them some good questions about ventilation, the product they are using, and how they will protect your home against a possible explosion. If you have an doubt about the company, please check references and ask how they protected the home during the spraying process.

We wanted to bring this to your attention, because we recently heard of a tragic case where two men were seriously injured while using lacquer. One of the main things they did wrong was try to properly ventilate the place during the project rather than before they started. Certain lacquers are excellent products, but they really are dangerous to something as simple as a small spark while plugging in an electrical cord.

Chism Brothers Painting is aware of the hazards and safety issues of lacquer and can help answer any questions you may have for your next project.
