Have you ever wondered why two houses on the same street can be painted at roughly the same time, but the finishes age at a different rate? One might seem totally impervious to age, while the other starts to look a little weathered after just a few years.
So, what’s behind this difference in paint lifespan? Luck of the draw? Genetics?
While the difference can sometimes be caused by differing paint quality (yes, good paint is worth the investment!), one of the major contributing factors is how much expertise and effort is poured into surface preparation.
You might start your project with the best intentions, tools, products, and a big bowl of Wheaties, but if you don’t thoroughly prepare the surface, that beautiful finish just won’t last as long. It’s a little like building a stunning new home on a crumbling foundation sitting on top of quicksand.
A little dramatic? Actually, that’s just pretty accurate.
Paint is only as sturdy as what it’s anchored to, so if you apply that new color over old coatings or a decayed surface, it will only last as long as what's under it.
With that said, what exactly does quality surface preparation often include?
To give you a closer look at one of our fantastic craftsmen in action, watch this brief video of Marty as he cleans mildew off of an exterior surface in La Jolla. This is a great example of taking the time to do the job properly.
There is always someone willing to paint for less. Because of that, we would urge you to watch out for bargain painters. Whether they do it intentionally or not, sometimes the drastically lower price points are made possible by the use of poor quality materials, lack of time invested in preparation, and contracting work to unmotivated workers. It is much wiser, and more cost-effective, to pay a little more initially to ensure that the job is done right and truly lasts.
