Weatherproofing Exterior Fences at a La Jolla Home

Last Updated: October 12, 2017

Weatherproofing means something different wherever you live. Certain climates dictate the process and products that should be used to ensure the longest lifespan. At a recent exterior painting job in La Jolla, we encountered the handiwork of San Diego’s biggest culprit: direct sunlight.

4 Step Staining Restoration for Exterior Gates

  1. First, we used a special cleaner to remove black mold that was growing on the surface of the wood.
  2. Next, we pressure washed the entire area, allowing it to dry thoroughly.
  3. The gates had begun losing their finish because of exposure to direct sunlight, so we power sanded them with a fine grit sandpaper.
  4. Last, we stained the fence, gates, and overhead beams with a dark stain that complemented the style and brought out the woodgrain patterns.

The Importance of Maintaining Decks & Fences

Deck and fence maintenance can require some different actions than exterior house painting. Bare wood structures like the ones in this project suffer more quickly from the dry baking of direct sunlight. Because these homeowners left their structures untouched for so long, the finish began to crack and peel, leaving the wood to dry out underneath.

We recommend regularly inspecting your fences, exterior post-and-beams, and decks. A fresh coat of stain can seal and protect the wood for months to come! Routine touch ups and re-coating are a smart part of any home maintenance plan in the San Diego area.
