Deck and Patio Maintenance Tips for Your San Diego Home

Last Updated: May 18, 2017

Is your outdoor space ready for action?

We may enjoy the benefit of year round outdoor fun here in San Diego, but summer is still a season when more time than ever is spent on decks and patios. Vacations, extra time with kids, visiting family... They all call for kicking back and relaxing in the sun.

A little TLC now will ensure your deck or patio is ready when you need it.

Summertime Maintenance Tips for Your Deck

Here are a few things to check for:

  • Check for loose or protruding nails or screws, especially along the surface where your bare feet will be.
  • Look closely for signs of wood rot too. Sometimes it’s obvious: the wood is crumbling in a specific point, looking like it experienced erosion. Weak boards not only pose a threat, but also indicate that wood rot is likely present elsewhere.
  • How is your stain or paint? If it was applied within the last year or two, you likely will be able to get by with just a thorough cleaning (more on that below). If it’s peeling or faded, we suggest giving us a call at Chism Brothers Painting. We can help check thoroughly for wood rot too, providing peace of mind that your deck is solid and sound for the season.

Why Should You Pressure Wash Your Deck or Patio?

Decks, patios, poolside areas, and outdoor kitchens can all benefit from professional pressure washing. Not only will it remove any slick, scummy buildup, but it also will wash away mold, mildew, and other contaminants that compromise the integrity of the surface over time. In other words, routine pressure washing will actually help your paint and stain to last longer, all while providing a fresh, clean look.

What’s not to love about that?
