When was the last time you really considered your staircase’s look and style? It’s easy to take these high-traffic surfaces for granted, but they’re actually prime real estate in your home. That means that there is a HUGE opportunity to elevate your interior style simply by showing your stairs some love.
That can look different for different people, and we’ll dig into that below. But first, let’s take a closer look at a project we just finished here in San Diego.
We took it one step at a time… Literally.
Once we had a clear game plan mapped out with our client, we meticulously prepped and contained the space. Masking, covering the floor, taping, etc. We then carefully applied the stripper to remove the old stain before prepping the wood and applying the new.

Here are the top three to keep in mind:
Stains. Stains are a popular choice for staircase refinishing as they bring out the wood’s natural grain and texture. Available in a wide range of colors, stains offer versatility to match various wood types and design preferences. They also add depth and richness to the staircase, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
Paints. Paints offer unlimited possibilities. Whether you prefer a classic white or a bold accent color, paints let you achieve different styles and color schemes, plus they’re ideal for covering imperfections and creating a smooth, uniform finish.
Clear Coats. Clear coats, such as polyurethane and varnish, are protective finishes that preserve the natural appearance of the wood. They add a glossy or matte sheen, depending on the desired look, and provide long-lasting durability against wear and tear.
First, consider the location of the staircase within your home and the amount of foot traffic it receives. For high-traffic areas like the main entrance or living room, you need a durable finish more than a decorative one. This is a key consideration to discuss when you’re chatting with your painting estimator.
Next, consider your home décor and design. After all, the stairs have to flow with your existing aesthetic unless you’re doing a widespread remodel or repaint. Stains tend to fit well in more traditional homes, while painted stairs have a more modern or contemporary look.
Lastly, take into account your personal preferences and lifestyle when choosing a finish. Some finishes may require more maintenance than others, so consider how much time and effort you’re willing to invest in upkeep, and ensure the finish aligns with your daily living habits and needs.
