Dreaming of an Updated Bathroom in 2016? We Have Two Tips for You

Last Updated: December 31, 2015

We all know about New Year’s resolutions. For some they involve going to the gym, or living a more active life. Other folks may want to read more books, find time for hobbies, spend more time with family, drink less coffee, take up fly fishing, or finally master the unicycle. Who knows? We all have our goals!

Here’s a question: do you have any New Year’s resolutions for your home? Maybe finally getting to that project that’s been roosting comfortably on the back burner since 2004?

If updating your bathroom is on your list of resolutions, we have a couple of specific tips and ideas that can make a drastic difference in a budget-friendly way.

Painting Your Bathroom

  • Color - As we’ve discussed before, color is incredibly powerful. Warmer options like red, yellow, and orange add a feeling of energy, while colors like grey and blue can cool things down. Because of this, don’t just look for a color that you like on a paint swatch, but consider what it will do for your mood in the morning as you brush your teeth.
  • Durability - Sheen dictates durability. For more details you can take a look at a recent article we wrote here , but the short version is that the glossier the sheen the more durable the finish. A flat paint, for example, might be terrific for the ceiling in your dining room, but it’s not the right option for your bathroom. Heat, humidity, and being a high-traffic area all call for a durable finish like semi-gloss.

Have You Considered Painting Your Bathroom Cabinets?

The photo above was taken after a bathroom painting project we completed in La Jolla. Painting cabinets like this rather than replacing them is a cost-effective, low-impact way to radically update your bathroom (or kitchen).

In case you’re inclined to tackle projects like this yourself, we will say that you technically can paint your cabinets as a do-it-yourself adventure. It’s important to point out though that a professional painter has the tools, expertise, and product knowledge to create a lasting, durable, and flawless finish. The investment in these kinds of cabinet painting services is well worth it.

Think of it this way: you could hypothetically paint your car yourself, but would you really want to try?
